**Short answer:** Unplug the Airwrap and let it cool, then remove the filter cage at the bottom of the handle. Brush lint and hair off the filter mesh with the cleaning brush Dyson supplies or a soft dry brush, then refit the cage. Dyson recommends cleaning the filter regularly, and a clogged filter is a common cause of the Airwrap cutting out.

The Airwrap pulls air in through a filter at the base of the handle. Over a few weeks that filter collects lint, hair, dust and hairspray residue. When it clogs, airflow drops, the motor works harder, and the machine can overheat and cut out or flash a warning light. Cleaning it takes a couple of minutes. This guide covers the steps for both the original Airwrap and the newer versions, how often to clean it, and what to do if the filter still looks dirty or the machine keeps stopping.

## Why the filter matters

The filter protects the motor from hair and dust. When it is blocked, less air reaches the motor and heater. The machine then runs hotter, and thermal protection may switch the heater or the whole machine off until it cools. That is why a dirty filter is linked with the Airwrap cutting out, blowing weaker air, or flashing a light on the handle.

Keeping the filter clean also helps airflow stay strong enough for the Coanda effect, which is what pulls hair around the barrels. If curls have become weaker over time, a clogged filter is one of the first things to check.

## What you need

Check your user manual before using any water. Dyson's guidance differs between parts and model generations, and the safest default is a dry clean.

- The filter cleaning brush that came with your Airwrap, if included
- A soft, dry brush such as a clean toothbrush or makeup brush as a backup
- A dry lint-free cloth
- Nothing wet or sharp: avoid pins, tweezers or scissors on the mesh

## Step by step: cleaning the filter

1. Switch off and unplug the Airwrap. Let it cool for several minutes.
2. Remove any attachment so the handle is easier to hold.
3. Remove the filter cage at the bottom of the handle. On the original Airwrap it twists off. On newer versions it slides down and off. Check your manual for the exact direction.
4. Hold the handle with the filter facing down so debris falls away from the machine.
5. Brush the mesh in one direction to lift lint and hair off. Use the supplied cleaning brush if you have it.
6. Wipe the outside of the cage with a dry cloth to remove residue.
7. Look for remaining hair caught in the mesh and lift it out with the brush.
8. Refit the filter cage until it sits flush, then plug in and test.

Note: Never run the Airwrap without its filter cage. The filter keeps hair and debris out of the motor.

## How often to clean it

Dyson recommends cleaning the filter regularly. A good routine is once a week if you use the Airwrap most days, and immediately whenever the machine cuts out or a light starts flashing. People who use hairspray or dry shampoo before styling, or style in a dusty bathroom, may need to clean it more often.

Make a habit of glancing at the filter before each use. If you can see a gray film of lint across the mesh, clean it before styling.

| Use pattern | Suggested cleaning |
| --- | --- |
| Daily or near-daily | About once a week |
| A few times a week | Every one to two weeks |
| Machine cuts out or flashes | Right away, then retest |
| Heavy hairspray or dry shampoo use | More often, check before each use |

## If it still cuts out after cleaning

If the filter is clean and the Airwrap still stops, flashes or loses power, check a few other things. Plug it directly into a wall outlet rather than an extension cord. Make sure the cord is not kinked or damaged near the handle. Let the machine cool fully, then try again.

If the problem continues, read [Dyson Airwrap flashing light](https://airandbarrel.com/blog/dyson-airwrap-flashing-light) and [Dyson Airwrap keeps cutting out](https://airandbarrel.com/blog/dyson-airwrap-keeps-cutting-out), then contact Dyson support. If your machine is within its warranty period, see [Dyson Airwrap warranty](https://airandbarrel.com/blog/dyson-airwrap-warranty) before attempting anything more than cleaning.

## Signs the filter needs cleaning

You do not need to wait for a warning light. These signs usually mean the filter is due for a clean:

- A visible gray or white film of lint across the mesh
- Weaker airflow than usual, or curls that no longer wrap as easily around the barrel
- The handle feels hotter than normal during styling
- The machine cuts out after a few minutes and restarts once it cools
- A flashing light on the handle

## Cleaning the attachments and dryer filters too

Barrels and brushes collect hair and product. Pull hair off the brush bristles after each session and wipe barrels with a dry or slightly damp cloth when cool. Let any damp parts dry fully before reattaching.

The same filter routine applies to hair dryers, including the Dyson Supersonic. See [how to clean a hair dryer filter](https://airandbarrel.com/blog/how-to-clean-hair-dryer-filter) for the general method. ## Frequently asked questions

**Can I wash the Dyson Airwrap filter with water?** Check your user manual first. A dry brush is the safe default, and the machine should never be used until every part is completely dry.

**Where is the filter on the Dyson Airwrap?** It sits behind the filter cage at the bottom of the handle, near where the cord enters.

**Can I replace the Airwrap filter?** Dyson sells replacement filter cages for some versions through its parts store. Check that the part lists your model.

**Why does my Airwrap stop working mid-style?** A clogged filter that causes overheating is a common reason. Clean the filter, let the machine cool, and try again.
