**Short answer:** Plug in, press the power switch, then set airflow and heat with the buttons on the back. Leave the Scalp protect button on to let the dryer lower heat as it gets close to your head, or switch it off to pick heat manually. Clip on an attachment and the dryer recalls the settings you last used with it. Put it down and Pause detect cuts the heater and slows the airflow.

This guide is for owners of the Dyson Supersonic Nural who want to understand what the sensors actually do and how to make the modes work for them. It covers the controls, Scalp protect mode, Attachment learning, Pause detect, the colored capsule light and when to turn each feature off. Facts come from Dyson's own product pages and the Nural listing. For model differences, see [Dyson Supersonic models explained](https://airandbarrel.com/blog/dyson-supersonic-models-explained) and our [Dyson hair dryer guide](https://airandbarrel.com/best/best-dyson-hair-dryer).

## The controls at a glance

The Nural keeps the familiar Supersonic layout: a power switch, airflow and heat buttons on the back of the head, and a cold shot button on the front of the handle. What is new is a separate Scalp protect button and a set of sensors that change settings automatically. The listing describes a network of Nural sensors that switch on intelligent features to fit your routine.

| Feature | What it does | Can you turn it off? |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Scalp protect mode | Lowers air temperature as the dryer gets close to the head, targeting 130°F at the scalp | Yes, with the Scalp protect button |
| Attachment learning | Recognizes each attachment and recalls your last airflow and heat for it | Settings follow your choices |
| Pause detect | Cuts heat and lowers airflow when the dryer is set down | Off only when a diffuser is attached |
| Capsule illumination | Changes color to show the current heat setting | No |
| Cold shot | Unheated air to set a style | Release the button |

## Scalp protect mode

With Scalp protect on, Dyson says a Time of Flight sensor measures the distance to your hair and the dryer reduces heat as it moves closer. The listing states a target of 130°F at the scalp for comfortable close-up drying. In practice you can dry the root area without constantly reaching for the heat button.

Turn it off when you want full control over heat, for example when you are using a round brush on mid-lengths and want a fixed setting. When off, the heat button works the usual way. Dyson also notes you need to switch Scalp protect off to use Attachment learning with the Gentle air attachment and the Styling concentrator.

1. Press the Scalp protect button so its light shows the mode is on.
2. Dry the root area as normal, keeping the dryer moving.
3. Watch the capsule light shift to cooler colors as you get closer to your head.
4. Press the button again to turn the mode off and set heat manually.

## Attachment learning

Each magnetic attachment is recognized when you clip it on. Dyson describes a Hall sensor that identifies the attachment and remembers your preferences. The attachments ship with preset airflow and heat that Dyson recommends, and if you change them, the dryer stores your new choice for that attachment next time.

Set it once per attachment: clip on the smoothing nozzle, choose your airflow and heat, dry as normal. Next time you clip it on, the dryer returns to those settings. Older Supersonic attachments use the same magnetic connection, so most will fit, but the automatic memory relies on the attachment being recognized. ## Pause detect and the capsule light

Pause detect uses a motion sensor to notice when the dryer stops moving. When you set it down, it switches off the heater and drops airflow, then resumes when you pick it up. Dyson says there is a deliberate short delay so a quick pause while styling does not trigger it, and that you should wait for the motor sound to ramp down before letting go. It stays inactive while a diffuser is attached, so you can hold still under a curl section.

The capsule, visible through the clear endcap, lights up in different colors to show the heat setting, from cool blue at low heat to red at the top setting, according to Dyson. It is a quick way to see what you are using without checking the buttons.

Note: Pause detect is a convenience feature. Always switch the dryer off and unplug it when you finish, and never leave it running unattended.

## A simple routine with the Nural

Here is one way to put the features together for a smooth blowout. Adjust heat to your hair type using our [heat settings by hair type](https://airandbarrel.com/blog/heat-settings-by-hair-type) ranges.

1. Towel dry and detangle. Clip on the smoothing nozzle or Flyaway attachment.
2. Leave Scalp protect on and rough dry the roots and lengths to about 80 percent dry.
3. Switch to the Styling concentrator. Turn Scalp protect off if you want fixed heat with a brush.
4. Dry section by section, finishing each with the cold shot.
5. Clean the filter regularly so airflow stays strong. See [how to clean a hair dryer filter](https://airandbarrel.com/blog/how-to-clean-hair-dryer-filter).

## Frequently asked questions

**Where is the Dyson Supersonic Nural manual?** Dyson publishes user guides on its support pages. Search Dyson support for your model or serial number, which is printed on the label near the bottom of the handle.

**Why does my Nural keep lowering the heat?** Scalp protect mode is on, and it reduces heat as the dryer nears your head. Press the Scalp protect button to turn it off and choose heat yourself.

**Why did my Nural slow down when I put it down?** That is Pause detect. It cuts the heater and reduces airflow when the dryer stops moving, then resumes when lifted.

**Do old Supersonic attachments work on the Nural?** They share the same magnetic fitting, so most attach. Check Dyson's compatibility notes for your attachments before buying extras.
