Dyson Airwrap on wet or dry hair: when to start
Published
Short answer
Use the Airwrap's dryer attachment on wet hair, then switch to the curl barrels and brushes once hair is damp, not dripping. Most Airwrap curling and smoothing works best on damp hair. You can use it on dry hair to refresh a style, but curls often hold better if you lightly mist each section first.

The Airwrap is sold as a dryer and a styler in one, which leads to a common question: should you start on wet, damp or dry hair? The answer depends on the attachment. Some are made to remove water, others to shape hair that is already mostly dry. Starting at the wrong stage is one of the main reasons people get weak curls or frizz. This page explains which Airwrap attachments work on wet hair, what damp actually means, how to use the Airwrap on second-day dry hair, and how the same logic applies to other multi-stylers.
Wet, damp or dry: the short version
Newer editions add exceptions. Dyson says the Airwrap Co-anda2x's Air straightener 2x attachment straightens from wet to dry, and the curly and coily editions include a diffuser made for wet curls.
Soaking wet
- Use these attachments
- Coanda smoothing dryer or pre-styling dryer
- Why
- Removes water quickly before styling
Damp (mostly dry, slightly cool to the touch)
- Use these attachments
- Curl barrels, smoothing brushes, round brush
- Why
- Hair can still be reshaped and then set
Dry (second day)
- Use these attachments
- Curl barrels with a light mist, flyaway attachment
- Why
- Refreshes shape; a little moisture helps curls set
| Hair state | Use these attachments | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Soaking wet | Coanda smoothing dryer or pre-styling dryer | Removes water quickly before styling |

Using the Airwrap on wet hair
Start with the dryer attachment. On the 2022 and later Airwraps this is the Coanda smoothing dryer, which Dyson describes as having a pre-style mode that takes hair from wet to damp. On the original Airwrap it is the pre-styling dryer. Towel dry first, gently squeezing out water, then dry roots and mid-lengths until hair is damp.
Avoid using the curl barrels on soaking wet hair. The barrel has to dry the section before it can shape it, so you hold each section much longer and the curl sets weakly. It also adds styling time.
- 1
Towel dry and detangle.
- 2
Attach the smoothing dryer or pre-styling dryer.
- 3
Dry roots first, then mid-lengths, on medium heat and high airflow.
- 4
Stop when hair feels damp and slightly cool, not wet.
- 5
Switch to barrels or brushes to style.
How damp is damp enough?
A common rule of thumb is about 80 percent dry. Hair should no longer drip or feel wet, but should feel slightly cool and soft to the touch, especially at the roots. If you press a section between your fingers and it leaves moisture, keep drying.
Thick or coarse hair holds water longer, so give the roots extra time. Fine hair dries quickly, so check often and do not overshoot. The heat setting guide suggests a typical heat band for your hair type.
Using the Airwrap on dry hair
You can use the Airwrap on dry hair to refresh second-day curls, smooth a cowlick or add bend to the ends. The catch is that fully dry hair can be harder to wrap and may not hold a new shape as well. Many people lightly mist each section with water, wait a moment, then wrap. Use the cold shot on each curl so it sets.
The flyaway attachment, where included, is designed for finishing dry, styled hair. For a full restyle, it is usually easier to dampen hair evenly and work through the normal routine.
Mistakes that come from starting at the wrong stage
Getting the starting point right also saves time. Drying with the dryer attachment first and then styling usually takes less total time than trying to dry and curl each section from wet with a barrel.
- Curling soaking wet hair: each section takes far longer and the curl often drops within the hour.
- Over-drying before styling: hair that is bone dry and smooth can slip off the barrel and resist wrapping.
- Damp roots, dry ends: the roots stay flat while the ends get extra passes. Dry roots first so the whole section is evenly damp.
- Skipping detangling: knots catch on the barrel and brush bristles. Comb through while hair is still wet.
- Heavy product on dry hair: creams and oils work better applied to damp hair before styling than layered on afterward.
Curly and coily hair
Curly and coily hair is the main exception to starting damp. If you want defined natural curls, apply product to soaking wet hair and use the diffuser from wet, on low airflow. To stretch hair, use the wide-tooth comb on damp hair. Our Airwrap on curly hair guide covers both methods.
1 Cup
Let a section fall into the diffuser bowl.
2 Raise
Lift the bowl toward the scalp.
3 Hold, then release
Hold for a few seconds, then lower the bowl away.
- Low airflow
- Low to medium heat
- Do not touch while drying
Other multi-stylers and hot air brushes
The same logic applies to most multi-stylers that combine a dryer and styling attachments: use the dryer head on wet hair, and the curling or brush heads on damp hair. Some tools are designed to work from wet. The ghd Duet Blowdry is described by ghd as designed for wet hair, and the ghd Duet Style dries and straightens at the same time, with its Shine Shot mode for dry hair only. Always follow the maker's instructions for your tool.

Frequently asked questions
Can you use the Dyson Airwrap on soaking wet hair? Use only the dryer attachment on wet hair. Switch to barrels and brushes when hair is damp.
Can you use the Dyson Airwrap on dry hair? Yes, to refresh a style. Lightly misting dry sections often helps curls hold.
Why do Airwrap curls drop when I start on wet hair? The barrel spends its time drying rather than shaping, so the curl sets weakly. Dry to damp first.
Does the Airwrap replace a hair dryer? The smoothing dryer can dry hair from wet, and Dyson describes the Co-anda2x as having full hair dryer performance. Some people still prefer a separate dryer for thick hair.
