Hair dryers
Premium dryers differ in airflow, weight, the number of heat and speed steps, and the attachments in the box. Watts alone say little about drying speed: newer digital motors move more air with less power.
- Typical weight
- about 11 oz to 2 lb for premium dryers
- Common settings
- 3 to 4 heat steps, 2 to 3 speeds, cool shot

Airflow decides how fast a dryer works. Older AC motors rely on high wattage; the digital and brushless motors in dryers from Dyson, ghd, Shark, Laifen and T3 spin much faster in a smaller body, which is why some of them weigh well under a pound.
Heat and speed steps matter more than the top temperature. Three or four heat steps and a separate cool shot let you dry fast at first and lower the heat as the hair gets close to dry. Some dryers also remember your last setting or measure the air temperature as they work.
Attachments shape the airflow: a concentrator for smoothing, a diffuser for curls, and sometimes a wide-tooth comb or a gentle-air nozzle. Check what is in the box, because a diffuser bought separately can add a lot to the price.
Common mistakes
- Comparing dryers on watts alone.
- Using the hottest setting from start to finish.
- Overlooking weight and cord length if you have long or thick hair.
