Brand lineups

Dyson, Bio Ionic, T3, ghd and Drybar each sell several dryers and stylers that look alike but differ in motor, weight, attachments and smart features. Their names change often, so the model number matters.

Dyson sells the Supersonic family of dryers (including the Nural and the lighter r model) and the Airwrap multi-styler in several kits. Kits differ mostly in which barrels, brushes and cases are in the box.

Bio Ionic, T3 and ghd each have a flagship dryer, a lighter or compact model and at least one hot air brush. Their spec sheets list weight, the number of heat and speed settings and the attachments, which makes them easy to compare side by side.

Shark and Laifen sell lower-priced multi-stylers and high-speed dryers that are often compared with Dyson. The comparison pages on this site put the listed specs next to each other so you can see what the price gap buys.

Common mistakes

  • Comparing two kits without checking which attachments each includes.
  • Assuming a newer model name means a new motor.
  • Overlooking the warranty length and where service is offered.
