Care and fixes

Most dryer problems trace back to a blocked filter: the dryer gets hot, cuts out or flashes a light to warn you. Cleaning the filter is the first check before anything else.

A dryer pulls air in through a filter at the back or bottom. When lint and dust block it, less air reaches the heater, the dryer runs hotter and a thermal cutout may switch it off. Some premium dryers, Dyson among them, flash a light when the filter needs cleaning.

Unplug the dryer and let it cool before you clean it. Most filters twist or slide off and can be brushed or wiped clean; the owner's manual shows how for your model and whether any part may be rinsed.

If the dryer still cuts out, blows cold air or shows a fault light after cleaning, check the manual's troubleshooting section and contact the maker's support. Do not open the dryer or keep using a damaged cord.

Common mistakes

  • Never cleaning the filter.
  • Wrapping the cord tightly around the handle.
  • Using the dryer while the filter is off or wet.
