T3 vs Dyson hair dryers, tier by tier

Published

T3 and Dyson both sell premium ionic hair dryers, but they price and design them differently. This page is for buyers comparing the two brands at a similar budget. We line up the models tier by tier: value, mid-range smart, and travel. All facts come from the Amazon listings for each model. T3 does not list weight in the listings we use, and Dyson only lists relative weight for its travel dryer, so we compare weight only where a listing gives it.

Tier by tier spec table

Prices are Amazon listing prices at the time of writing. Dyson publishes the Supersonic heat settings as 100 C (212 F) fast drying, 80 C (176 F) regular and 60 C (140 F) gentle, plus a constant cold shot of 28 C (82 F). T3 does not publish temperatures in these listings, so heat is compared by number of steps, not degrees.

Value tier: T3 AireLuxe and StyleMax vs Supersonic Origin

The T3 AireLuxe listing describes digitally controlled heat, an ion generator producing 10 million negative ions per second, 5 heat and 3 speed settings, and a lock-in cool shot. It is sold as a styling set with a paddle brush and a 2.5 in round brush, so you get the dryer and the blowout brushes in one box. The T3 Featherweight StyleMax is even cheaper and lists 5 heat and 3 speed settings, a volume boost switch, an ion generator and four attachments, including a diffuser.

The Dyson Supersonic Origin costs far more and comes with one attachment, the magnetic Styling concentrator. What the extra money buys is Dyson's Air Multiplier airflow, a high-pressure, high-velocity jet, and heat control that measures air temperature over 40 times a second. If you want more heat steps and more attachments for less money, T3 wins this tier. If you want Dyson's airflow and heat regulation, the Origin is the cheapest way in. See Supersonic vs Origin for what the Origin leaves out.

Smart tier: T3 Aire IQ vs Supersonic Nural

Both brands sell a dryer that adjusts itself. The T3 Aire IQ listing describes Heat ID technology that adjusts heat and speed to your hair, SoftAire airflow, smart attachment recognition that refines heat and airflow for the connected attachment, a high-res digital display and an AireX motor. Its kit includes a quick dry concentrator, a style concentrator, a diffuser and a dryer stand.

The Dyson Supersonic Nural listing describes Nural sensors: scalp protect mode that targets 130 F at the scalp when the dryer is close to your head, attachment learning that remembers settings for each attachment, pause detect that cuts heat when you set it down, and a capsule light that shows the heat setting. The Aire IQ is cheaper and includes a diffuser and stand; the Nural adds scalp temperature control and pause detect.

Travel tier: T3 Afar vs Supersonic Travel

The T3 Afar ($199.99) is a travel-size dryer with auto dual voltage, a folding handle, T3 IonAir airflow and an ion generator. The Dyson Supersonic Travel ($299.99) is listed as 32% smaller and 25% lighter than the Supersonic Nural, with universal voltage that adapts automatically and a Travel concentrator, and it can share attachments with other Supersonic models.

Both adapt to foreign voltage automatically, which matters more than size if you travel abroad. The Afar costs less and folds; the Travel suits people who already own Supersonic attachments. Read how to travel with a hair dryer before packing either one.

Which brand fits you

Choose T3 if you want a premium ionic dryer at a lower price, like a lot of manual heat steps, or want brushes or a diffuser included. The AireLuxe suits blowouts, the StyleMax suits curly hair on a budget, and the Aire IQ suits people who want automatic settings without Dyson pricing.

Choose Dyson if fast, high-pressure airflow and fine-grained heat control are the priority, or if scalp protect and pause detect appeal. Our best hair dryer, best hair dryer under $300 and best Dyson hair dryer guides include all of these models.
