This page is for anyone shopping for a Supersonic, buying one secondhand or trying to work out which model they already own. It explains where to find the model code, how the HD numbers are commonly mapped to products, and what actually differs between the standard Supersonic, the Nural, the Origin, the r and the Travel. Facts come from Dyson's published specs and the product listings in our Dyson hair dryer guide. Regional naming varies, so confirm any unit by serial number with Dyson.

Where to find your model number

Every Supersonic has a rating label, usually near the base of the handle under the filter area. It shows the HD code, the voltage and the serial number. The serial number is what Dyson support uses to identify a machine and its warranty. If you are buying secondhand, ask for a photo of the label before you pay.

The same dryer can carry different HD codes in different countries, because codes often reflect regional electrical versions and plugs. That is why you see owners in different regions describe the same-looking dryer by different numbers.

How the HD codes are commonly listed

Dyson does not publish one simple public table of every code, so the mapping below reflects how retailers and refurbishers commonly list them. Treat it as a guide and confirm with Dyson for a specific unit.

Note.Regional versions are wired for local voltage. A dryer bought in one country may not be safe to use on another country's outlets.

The standard Supersonic: Dyson's published specs

Dyson's technical specification sheet for the Supersonic lists the Dyson digital motor V9 at 110,000 rpm, 1600 W on 120 V, three airflow settings and four heat settings. The listed temperatures are 212°F (100°C) high, 176°F (80°C) medium, 140°F (60°C) low and a 82.4°F (28°C) cold shot. The net weight including cable and plug is listed as 1 lb 13 oz, with an 8 ft 10 in cable.

Beyond the code numbers, Dyson sells several Supersonic variants. The differences that matter most are features and format, not motor family. Here is what each listing in our guides says.

Buying secondhand or refurbished: what to check

Because the codes are confusing, secondhand listings sometimes describe a dryer as a newer model than it is. A few quick checks protect you before you pay. Ask for clear photos of the rating label, the filter cage and every attachment included. Confirm the voltage on the label matches your outlets; a 220 to 240 V regional version is not suitable for US 120 V outlets, and the reverse is also true.

Look at the filter cage for heavy lint or damage, since a clogged filter can cause cut-outs that a seller might describe as a fault, or hide one. Ask whether the dryer has been registered and whether any warranty remains. Dyson support can confirm a model from its serial number. If a deal seems far below normal pricing, treat it with caution; counterfeit Dyson dryers do circulate, and the label and serial check is your best protection.

Which one should you pick?

If you want the classic dryer at a lower price, the standard Supersonic or Origin covers the core performance. The Origin listing includes only the Styling concentrator, so budget for extra attachments if you need a diffuser. The Nural adds automatic heat changes near the scalp and memory for attachments, explained in how to use the Supersonic Nural. The r suits people who find the classic shape awkward to angle. The Travel is for international trips; see traveling with a hair dryer.
