Comparison
Dyson Supersonic vs Supersonic Nural
Published
Short answer
The Supersonic Nural adds sensors to the classic Supersonic design. Dyson lists a scalp protect mode that targets 130°F at the scalp, attachment learning that remembers your heat and airflow per attachment, and pause detect that cuts the heater when you set the dryer down. The Supersonic Origin keeps the core: fast drying, intelligent heat control and negative ions, with fewer attachments and no sensor features.

Verdict
Buy the Supersonic Origin if you want Dyson's fast, heat-controlled drying for less and mostly use one attachment. Buy the Supersonic Nural if you swap attachments often, dry close to the scalp, or want the dryer to manage heat and pauses for you.
This page is for anyone choosing between the classic-shape Dyson Supersonic and the newer Supersonic Nural. Both use the same familiar ring-shaped head and handle, and both use Dyson's intelligent heat control. The question is whether the Nural's sensor features are worth the extra money for your routine. We compare the Supersonic Origin and the Supersonic Nural using only what Dyson states on the Amazon listings, explain what each Nural feature does in practice, and finish with who should buy which. If you want the full lineup first, see Dyson Supersonic models explained.

What the Nural sensors actually do
Scalp protect mode. Dyson says the Nural automatically adjusts air temperature to keep a target of 130°F at the scalp when the dryer is close to your head. It has its own button. With it on, heat drops as you move in close. With it off, you choose the heat setting yourself, the same as on any other dryer.
Attachment learning. Each intelligent attachment is recognized when you click it on, and the dryer recalls the airflow and heat you last used with it. If you always diffuse on low heat and smooth on high, you stop pressing buttons every time you swap.
Pause detect. When the dryer senses no motion, it switches off the heater and lowers airflow. Pick it up and it comes back. This mostly saves the noise and heat of a dryer blasting on the counter while you section hair.
Capsule illumination. A light on the body changes color to show which heat setting you are on, so you can see it at a glance instead of counting button presses.
- Scalp protect: most useful for people who dry the roots close up or have a sensitive scalp.
- Attachment learning: most useful if you use two or more attachments in one session.
- Pause detect: a convenience, not a drying-speed feature.
What the Supersonic Origin already gives you
The Supersonic Origin is the plainer version of the classic shape. Its listing describes a small motor with Air Multiplier technology producing a high-pressure, high-velocity jet of air, intelligent heat control that measures temperature over 40 times a second, a magnetic Styling concentrator that stays cool on its surface thanks to Heat Shield, negative ions to reduce static, and a motor that Dyson says is acoustically tuned.
For many people that is the part that matters: drying speed, controlled heat and a smooth finish. The Origin skips the sensor features and ships with a simpler attachment set, which is why it costs less. Attachments for the classic Supersonic shape are sold separately by Dyson, so you can add a diffuser or other tools later if you need them. Which hair types benefit from which model
Fine or color-treated hair. Both models control heat, but the Nural's scalp protect mode and colored heat light make it easier to keep temperatures low without thinking about it. See heat settings by hair type for typical ranges.
Thick or long hair. Drying time comes mostly from airflow and how you section, not from sensors. The Origin covers this well. Pause detect on the Nural can be handy during long sessions where you set the dryer down often.
Curly and coily hair. If you diffuse, you will want a diffuser attachment. The Nural's attachment learning remembers your low-airflow diffusing setting, which is a real time saver for curly routines. Check our guide to hair dryers for curly hair for other options.

At the end of every section, for every hair type. Color-treated hair: one band lower.
Cost and value
At the listed prices the Nural costs about $50 more than the Origin. That money buys convenience and heat guardrails, not a different motor class according to what the listings state. If you dry hair quickly with one attachment and rarely change settings, the Origin is the better value. If you switch attachments, worry about scalp heat, or share the dryer with someone whose settings differ, the Nural features earn their place.
There is also the Supersonic Travel at $299.99, which Dyson says is 32% smaller and 25% lighter than the Nural with universal voltage. It is worth a look if you fly often. Our Dyson hair dryer guide compares the whole range.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Supersonic Nural faster than the Supersonic Origin? Dyson's listings do not claim a drying speed difference between the two. The Nural's additions are sensor features: scalp protect, attachment learning, pause detect and a heat indicator light.
Can I turn off scalp protect mode on the Nural? Yes. Dyson lists a scalp protect button. When it is on, heat lowers automatically near the scalp. When it is off, you pick the heat setting manually.
Do Supersonic attachments work on both models? Both use the classic Supersonic shape and magnetic attachments. Attachment learning only works with Dyson's intelligent attachments on the Nural, so older attachments may fit but will not be remembered. Check Dyson's compatibility notes before buying extras.
Which one should I buy for fine hair? The Nural makes low-heat drying easier because scalp protect and the colored heat light keep temperatures in view. The Origin also controls heat, so it works fine if you are happy to manage settings yourself.
