Wattage is printed on almost every hair dryer box, and it is easy to assume more watts means a better dryer. That used to be a rough guide when every dryer used a similar motor. Now that many dryers use small high-speed motors, wattage tells you less about drying speed than it did. This page explains what wattage measures, why 1875 W is so common in the US, how many watts typical dryers and multi-stylers use, what that means for amps and your electric bill, and what to look at instead when comparing dryers.

What wattage measures

Wattage is the maximum power the dryer draws, usually on its highest heat and speed. Most of that power goes to the heating element. The motor uses a smaller share. So wattage is mostly a measure of how much heat the dryer can make, not how much air it moves.

On lower heat settings the dryer draws less than its rated wattage. On the cool shot, with the heater off, it draws only what the motor needs.

Why so many dryers are 1875 W

A standard US household outlet is rated at 15 amps and 125 volts. Multiply those and you get 1875 W. That is why 1875 W is the common ceiling for US hand-held hair dryers. A dryer at 1875 W already draws about 15 amps, so it can trip a breaker if other appliances share the circuit. See hair dryer trips breaker.

Some professional dryers list higher ratings. The BaBylissPRO Falco and Rapido both list 2000 W. Others, such as the BaBylissPRO Dual Ionic and ghd Helios, list 1875 W.

Typical wattage by dryer type

For Dyson, check the rating label on your machine or Dyson's spec page for your model. Dyson's US listings have commonly shown the Airwrap at around 1300 W and the Supersonic at around 1600 W, but figures can differ by model and region, so confirm on your unit.

Wattage vs airflow: what dries hair faster

Drying speed depends on both heat and how much air moves past the hair. Older AC motor dryers needed a lot of heat to dry quickly. Newer brushless and digital motors spin much faster and push more air, so a dryer can dry quickly at a lower heat or lower wattage. Dyson, for example, says its digital motor V9 spins at up to 110,000 rpm in the Airwrap.

When comparing dryers, look at the motor type, listed airflow if given (ghd lists 75 mph for the Helios), weight, and heat and speed settings, not wattage alone. Our high-speed hair dryers explained page covers motor types.

How much electricity does a hair dryer use?

Energy use is watts times hours. An 1875 W dryer running on full power for 10 minutes uses about 0.31 kWh (1.875 kW x 1/6 hour). Multiply by your electricity rate to estimate the cost. At an example rate of 15 cents per kWh, that is about 5 cents per session. Real use is usually lower, because you switch to medium heat or the cool shot for part of the time.

If you want to cut energy use, rough dry on medium heat with high airflow, and save high heat for short bursts.

Find the dryer's wattage on the rating label.

  2. 2

Divide by 1000 to get kilowatts.

  3. 3

Multiply by the hours of use (10 minutes is about 0.17 hours).

  4. 4

Multiply by your rate per kWh from your electric bill.

Wattage and travel

Outside North America many countries use 220 to 240 V. A single-voltage US dryer cannot be used on those outlets without a suitable converter, and many converters cannot handle a full-power dryer. Dual-voltage or universal-voltage dryers, such as the T3 Afar with auto dual voltage or the Dyson Supersonic Travel with universal voltage, avoid that problem. See how to travel with a hair dryer.

Frequently asked questions

How many watts is the Dyson Airwrap? Check the rating label on your unit. Dyson's US listings have commonly shown around 1300 W, but confirm for your model and region.

Is a higher wattage hair dryer better? Not necessarily. Airflow from the motor affects drying speed as much as heat. A high-speed dryer can dry quickly at the same or lower wattage.

How many amps does an 1875 W hair dryer use? About 15 amps at 120 to 125 V on full heat.

Does wattage affect hair? Wattage sets the maximum heat available. How hot your hair gets depends on the setting, distance and time, so use the lowest setting that dries your hair efficiently.
