Fix
Dyson Airwrap keeps cutting out or shutting off
Published
Short answer
The most common reason a Dyson Airwrap cuts out is a clogged filter. When airflow drops, the Airwrap overheats and shuts itself off to protect the motor, often with a flashing light. Unplug it, let it cool, clean the filter cage and mesh, refit it and try again. If it still cuts out after a thorough clean, contact Dyson support.

This page is for Airwrap owners whose styler stops during use, pulses on and off, shuts down with a flashing light or will not restart. It covers the likely causes in order, from the simple filter fix to cord and outlet checks, plus what the lights usually mean and when to call Dyson. If your Airwrap will not power on at all, also see Dyson Airwrap not working, and for light codes see Dyson Airwrap flashing light.
Why the Airwrap shuts off
The Airwrap pulls air in through a filter at the base of the handle. Its motor and heater are protected by sensors; Dyson's listings say intelligent heat control measures air temperature over 40 times a second. When the intake is restricted, the airflow falls and the machine heats up faster than normal, so it shuts down to protect itself. Dyson support lists cutting out during use, a flashing light, not turning on and overheating as signs the filter needs cleaning.

Step by step fix
Work through these in order. Most Airwraps that cut out are back to normal after step four.
- 1
Switch off and unplug the Airwrap. Let it cool for at least 10 to 15 minutes.
- 2
Remove the attachment and look at the filter cage at the base of the handle.
- 3
Twist and remove the filter cage as described in your manual.
- 4
Brush the filter mesh with the C-brush or a soft, dry toothbrush. Dyson's guidance is no chemicals or water on the mesh.
- 5
Clean the outer filter cage. Dyson describes rinsing it under warm water with a small amount of clarifying shampoo, then drying it completely.
- 6
Hold the cage up to the light. You should see light through it. Refit it fully.
- 7
Plug in and test on medium heat and airflow for a few minutes.
Note.Do not use the Airwrap with the filter removed, and make sure every part is completely dry before refitting.
If it only cuts out on high heat or with one attachment
Some owners notice the Airwrap runs fine on low settings but stops on the highest heat and airflow, or only with a particular barrel or brush. That pattern still points to airflow first: the highest settings move the most air and generate the most heat, so a partly blocked filter shows up there before anywhere else. Clean the filter even if it looks only lightly dusty.
Next, check the attachment itself. Make sure it clicks fully onto the handle and that no hair is wound inside the barrel slots or bristle base. Hair caught in the air slots of a curl barrel restricts flow at the outlet. Remove it gently once the attachment is cool. If one attachment still causes cut-outs while others run normally, contact Dyson about that attachment.
Check the cord, plug and outlet
If the Airwrap cuts out when you move the cord or turn the handle, the cord or swivel connection may be damaged. Stop using it and contact Dyson rather than trying a repair. Look for kinks, scorch marks or a cord that feels hot.
Bathroom outlets in the US are usually GFCI protected. If the outlet itself goes dead, press its reset button. Try another outlet on a different circuit. If high-wattage tools often trip your power, see hair dryer trips breaker. Do not use the Airwrap with extension cords that are not rated for its wattage, or with voltage converters; Dyson advises against converters.
Habits that reduce cut-outs
Most cut-outs come back if the filter is ignored. Dyson recommends cleaning it about once a month, or whenever the light flashes. Heavy users of dry shampoo and hairspray may need to clean more often, because residue sticks to the mesh.
- Clean the filter monthly as a habit.
- Avoid spraying product near the intake while the Airwrap runs.
- Let the Airwrap rest between long styling sessions.
- Store it in its case away from lint and dust.
- Do not wrap the cord tightly around the handle.
When to contact Dyson
If the Airwrap still cuts out with a clean, correctly fitted filter, the issue is likely internal. Dyson support can run diagnostic checks, and Airwraps carry a manufacturer warranty that varies by region and purchase date; see Dyson Airwrap warranty. Have your serial number ready; it is printed on the label on the handle. If yours is out of warranty and you are considering a replacement, our Airwrap guide and Airwrap alternatives compare current options.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my Dyson Airwrap keep stopping? Usually the filter is clogged and the machine is shutting off to avoid overheating. Clean the filter and let it cool.
Why does my Airwrap shut off with a flashing light? A flashing light commonly signals the filter needs cleaning or is not fitted. Check the manual for your model's light codes.
How often should I clean the Airwrap filter? Dyson recommends about once a month, or whenever the light flashes.
Can I keep using the Airwrap if it cuts out now and then? Clean the filter first. If it keeps happening, stop and contact Dyson, especially if the cord is hot or damaged.
