Fix
Dyson Supersonic cutting out, overheating or not turning on
Published
Short answer
A Dyson Supersonic that cuts out or runs hot almost always has a clogged filter. Dyson says three flashing white lights mean the filter needs cleaning, and one flashing white light means it is missing or not fitted. Unplug it, let it cool, twist off the filter cage, clean it, refit it and restart. If it still will not run, check the outlet and contact Dyson.

This page is for Supersonic, Supersonic Nural and Supersonic Origin owners whose dryer stops mid-use, feels unusually hot, flashes its lights or will not switch on. It lists the causes from most to least common, explains Dyson's light signals, and walks through a safe fix order. It also covers a Nural behavior that is easy to mistake for a fault. For the cleaning procedure in detail, see how to clean a hair dryer filter.
What the lights mean
Dyson's support pages describe the Supersonic's white LED signals. Three white lights flashing means clean the filter. A single white light flashing means the filter is absent or not properly fitted. In both cases, switch off, sort out the filter and switch back on. Other light patterns can indicate faults; check the user guide for your model or contact Dyson.

Fix a clogged filter
The filter cage sits at the base of the handle. Dyson's guide is to hold the handle firmly, rotate the cage counterclockwise and pull it down and away. Brush the mesh with a soft, dry toothbrush or the C-brush. Some models allow a rinse with warm water and a small amount of clarifying shampoo; follow the method Dyson gives for your model and let parts dry completely.
- 1
Switch off, unplug and let the dryer cool.
- 2
Twist the filter cage counterclockwise and pull it off.
- 3
Brush lint from the mesh and the intake.
- 4
If your model's guide allows, rinse the cage and dry it fully.
- 5
Hold it up to the light to confirm it is clear.
- 6
Refit the cage until it seats, plug in and test.
Note.Never run the dryer without its filter, and never refit a damp filter.
Overheating and thermal cut-outs
Dyson's listings say the Supersonic measures air temperature over 40 times a second to regulate heat, and the Supersonic r listing says over 20 times a second. If airflow drops because the intake is blocked, the dryer heats up more quickly and can shut down. Covering the intake with a hand, a towel or long hair while drying has the same effect. Hold the handle low, keep long hair away from the base and keep the intake clear.
If the outlet end of the dryer feels very hot and the attachment is not a Dyson one, try with the attachment removed. Third-party attachments may not fit the magnetic mount as intended.
Nural features that look like faults
The Supersonic Nural changes heat and airflow on its own. Pause detect cuts the heater and reduces airflow when you put the dryer down, then resumes when you pick it up. Scalp protect mode lowers heat as the dryer gets close to your head. If your Nural seems to lose heat during use, check whether Scalp protect is on. Our Supersonic Nural guide explains each mode.
If it will not turn on
Check the basics before assuming the dryer has failed. Many US bathroom outlets have GFCI protection that trips and needs resetting. If the outlet is dead, press reset or try another room. Check the cord for kinks, cuts or scorch marks, and stop using the dryer if you find any. A dryer that trips breakers repeatedly may share a circuit with other loads; see hair dryer trips breaker.
- Reset the GFCI outlet or try another outlet.
- Make sure the filter cage is fitted.
- Let the dryer cool fully if it shut down hot.
- Inspect the cord; stop if damaged.
- Contact Dyson with your serial number if nothing works.
When to contact Dyson
If the filter is clean and fitted, the outlet works and the dryer still cuts out or will not start, contact Dyson support. Dyson's commercial Supersonic spec sheet lists a 2-year parts and labour warranty; consumer warranty terms vary by region and model, so check your registration. If you are replacing a dryer, our Dyson hair dryer guide and Supersonic models explained cover the current line.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my Dyson hair dryer keep cutting out? A clogged or loose filter is the most common cause. Clean and refit the filter cage, then let the dryer cool before restarting.
Why is my Dyson hair dryer overheating? Blocked airflow from a dirty filter or a covered intake makes it run hot. Clean the filter and keep the intake clear.
Why is my Dyson hair dryer not turning on? Check the outlet and GFCI reset, confirm the filter is fitted and let it cool. If it still will not start, contact Dyson.
Why does my Nural turn down when I put it down? That is Pause detect. It reduces heat and airflow when the dryer stops moving, then resumes when lifted.
