Lint, hair and product residue collect on the air intake filter of every hair dryer. When the filter clogs, airflow drops, the motor works harder and many dryers cut out to protect themselves. This page covers the general method for any dryer with a removable filter, the Dyson Supersonic filter cage, and what to do with models whose filters do not come off. Cleaning takes a few minutes and is one of the first fixes for a dryer that cuts out or blows cold air.

Why the filter matters

The filter sits over the air intake, usually at the back of the dryer or at the base of the handle. It stops hair and lint from reaching the motor. As it clogs, less air passes through, the heater runs hotter for the same airflow, and the dryer's thermal protection may switch it off. Many people mistake a dirty filter for a failing motor.

  • Weaker airflow than usual.
  • Louder or higher-pitched sound.
  • Dryer cuts out, then restarts after cooling.
  • Flashing warning lights on smart dryers.
  • Visible lint on the back grille.

General method for removable filters

Many premium dryers list removable filters. The BaBylissPRO Nano Light listing mentions a removable mesh filter and cover, the Rapido and Dual Ionic listings mention removable filter covers, and the Neuro Halo lists a clean filter indicator light. The steps below fit most of them. Check your manual for the exact release method.

  1. 1

Switch off and unplug the dryer. Let it cool for several minutes.

  2. 2

Remove the filter cover. Most twist, slide or pop off; do not force it.

  3. 3

Tap out loose lint over a trash can.

  4. 4

Brush the mesh with a soft, dry toothbrush or the cleaning brush supplied.

  5. 5

Wipe the intake area around the filter with a dry cloth.

  6. 6

If the maker says the filter is washable, rinse it and let it dry completely before refitting.

  7. 7

Refit the cover until it clicks or seats fully, then test the dryer.

Note.Never put water near the dryer body or motor. Only wash parts the manual says can be washed, and dry them fully before refitting.

Cleaning the Dyson Supersonic filter cage

Dyson's support guide for the Supersonic describes a removable filter cage at the base of the handle. To remove it, hold the handle firmly, rotate the filter cage counterclockwise and pull it down and away from the machine. Dyson describes two methods depending on model: a dry clean with a soft toothbrush or the Dyson C-brush, and, for models that allow it, a rinse under warm water with a little clarifying shampoo. Dyson says to hold the cage up to the light afterward; you should see light through it.

Dyson recommends cleaning the filter about once a month, or whenever the three white LEDs flash. A single flashing white light means the filter is missing or not fitted correctly. For the Airwrap, the process is similar but the details differ; see how to clean the Dyson Airwrap filter.

T3, Bio Ionic and other brands

T3 and Bio Ionic dryers in our guides have rear intakes with removable or brushable covers. The Bio Ionic SMART-X listing mentions a self-cleaning function that helps deter dirt particles and still recommends cleaning with a brush after extended use. For any brand, the safe default is a soft dry brush on the outside of the filter. If you cannot see how the cover comes off, check the manual before prying; some filters are fixed and are meant to be brushed in place.

If a dryer still runs hot or weak after a thorough filter clean, the problem may be the cord, the heater or the motor. See hair dryer blowing cold air and contact the maker if it is under warranty.

How often to clean

Monthly is a good default and matches Dyson's guidance for the Supersonic. Clean more often if you use dry shampoo, hairspray or texture spray near the dryer, if you style in a dusty room or if several people share the tool. A quick brush of the intake after each use takes seconds and keeps lint from compacting.

  • Daily users: brush the intake weekly, full clean monthly.
  • Occasional users: full clean every one to two months.
  • Any time a filter warning light appears: clean right away.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wash my hair dryer filter? Only if the manual says it is washable. Many filters are meant to be brushed dry. Never wet the dryer body.

How do I remove the Dyson Supersonic filter? Hold the handle, twist the filter cage counterclockwise and pull it down off the base, per Dyson's support guide.

Why does my dryer still cut out after cleaning? Check that the filter is seated correctly and fully dry, and that nothing blocks the outlet. If it continues, contact the maker.

What does a dirty filter do to a hair dryer? It reduces airflow, makes the dryer run hotter and noisier, and can trigger thermal cut-outs that stop it mid-use.
